So you understand exactly how I felt when, on a recent trip to New York City, I idly Googled "japanese curry near 56th street" and Go Go Curry popped up. I much preferred Little Spoon, but I was not about to argue. The store closed in about 20 minutes, but I was only about 20 short blocks away. I jumped in a cab, who went to the wrong address. I was sitting in the cab absolutely positive that I was going to get there too late. At exactly 9:50 p.m., five minutes before closing, I dashed the 20 yards from the street corner and made it inside.

What awaited me was a 500-square-foot slice of Tokyo, neatly segmented away and dropped into the Garment District. Go Go isn't smack in the middle of the Times Square action like the nearby Yoshinoya, but if you're on the right street you can't miss it: The garish yellow-and-red awnings and banners proclaiming the availability of curry rice in both English and Japanese, the windows covered with paper signs.

Inside, it's just like any Japanese curry joint: Paper all over the walls, newspaper clippings, random messages from famous Japanese well-wishers, signs advertising their specials. But mostly it's Matsui memorabilia. The folks at Go Go are big fans of Hideki "Godzilla" Matsui -- the name of the place, Go Go, means 55 in Japanese, the number that Matsui wore with the Yomiuri Giants before joining up with the New York Yankees. Go Go Curry advertises 55 cents off any entree on any day that Matsui hits a homer.

I was energized to see that, like the decor, the menu was unapologetically curry-stand. There is one thing on the menu. All you choose is how big a bowl you want and what you want them to put on top of it. Go Go Curry will sell you a plate of its curry sauce over rice for $5, but to order this would mark you as a hopeless amateur. You at the very least want a slice of katsu -- Go Go offers the traditional pork, but also chicken.

But the mark of a true curry addict is one who orders cheese, which is usually a mild shredded Jack or something that's applied generously over the top of the sauce. If this sounds disgusting to you, you are wrong, and one day when you try it you will realize just how wrong. The cheese melts on the hot sauce, adding another flavor and texture to the already complex combination of foods: creaminess.

Finally, for the sort of customer that at that point does not actually care if he or she has a heart attack before reaching their 30th birthday, you can order both katsu and cheese, which is how I have always eaten curry ever since the first time I found that such a thing was possible.

More toppings can be added a la carte at reasonable rates: $1 for things like boiled eggs and pickled onions, or $2 for extra katsu, sausages or shrimp. If you're totally crazy, you can order one of their two exorbitant kitchen-sink dishes: Grand Slam Curry features chicken, pork, eggs, shrimp and sausages for $12.50, and the absurd wWorld Champion Curry has all that plus extra shrimp, more sausages and something like double the rice and sauce: 5.5 pounds of food for $25. It is limited to five orders per day, unnecessarily.

There's also a little pile of shredded cabbage, which is the celery to curry's Buffalo wings, if you get my drift. At first it seems like a decorative garnish, but after a whole pile of starch and fried meat, you pretty much feel compelled to eat it as an apology to your poor abused insides.

All in all, it's easy to get in and out of Go Go for under 10 bucks -- especially because of the pitchers of water by the cash register. As I said: authentic.

You just spend your days wishing you could eat it again, saving your money so you can fly back to Tokyo and eat more.

"You just spend your days wishing 〜"
